The best move of the summer was the hiring of Mark Mitchell as an assistant coach at Ohio State. First year head coach Kevin McGuff made a power move and added coach Mitchell to the staff. Soon after the program received a huge verbal commitment from the No.1 prospect in the country Kelsey Mitchell a dynamite 5-8 guard who happens to be the newly hired assistants daughter.Although Coach Mitchell is a qualified and experienced basketball coach very seldom does a boys high school basketball head coach go on to a women’s collegiate basketball assistant coaching position. The program also managed to get verbal commitments from Alexa Hart 6-3;Makayla Waterman 6-3 and Chelsea Mitchell 5-11 also Mitchell’s daughter.

The Mac Irvin Lady Fire girls basketball program was offered to be sponsored by Nike Girls Elite Youth basketball. However, directors at the Chicago based program rejected the sponsorship because they were offered a tier two classification which means less funding and less perks from Nike. Whitney Young high school is a major hub for Nike, its events and prospects. The boys basketball division of Mac Irvin is a huge Nike draw. The girls program has had great success as well with McDonald’s All-American selections,USA Team Members and college prospects all over the country.
